I’ve been meaning to write about this for quite some time and now that peak wedding season is coming to a close, I’ve finally had a chance to sit down and get it done! We all like to start off the year feeling happy, healthy and excited about what the year ahead will bring. So, this year I decided to start my year by participating in the 100 happy days challenge. In a nutshell, it’s basically about finding something happy in everyday and articulating it into a photo to post on social media. A gratitude diary of sorts.
I first came across the idea when a good friend of mine started her own 100 happy days late last year. I found that I really looked forward to seeing her posts everyday, and thought, maybe I should do that! After debating about it for a while, and my friends happy days due to finish on the 1st of January, I decided it was a perfect time to take the batten from her and start my own year with a bang!
At first I was a little worried how I would find something happy to photograph everyday. I work from a home based office, there are some days I don’t even leave the house! But it’s amazing how once you change your mindset, it’s actually quite easy to find something to be happy about in everyday. I was also amazed at the positive reaction I had from friends and family about my posts each day. A number of people made comment to me, some of whom I don’t see very often at all, about how they looked forward to seeing what I had chosen for the day, and it made them happy to see my happiness, it was contagious!
Now don’t get me wrong, there were days that were harder than others to find something to be happy about. Sometimes simply because I literally hadn’t been out all day, or because something upsetting had happened. But even on those days, I still found something to smile about, and even more amazingly, one of the first things I thought about when I was given some particularly sad news one day was ‘ok, what is the happiness in today going to be?’.
After initially worrying that the challenge would feel like it was taking forever, all too soon my 100th day was upon me. Reflecting over the first 100 days of my year I realised not for the first time during the challenge how lucky in life I am, and how if you just try hard enough, there really is something happy in every day. I highly recommend the challenge to anyone who’s game, but you have to be doing it for the right reasons. It’s not about how many likes or comments you can get on your pictures, I’m sure some of my happy days left a couple of people thinking ‘Really? That’s her happy day today?!’ I did it for no-one but myself and I found true joy in doing it. Plus, at the end I had a record 100 fabulous days full of things that made me smile.
